Reviews of Tomb Raider Game PS3

Being a fan of Tomb Raider since the first game (I still have it on the PS1), I was very impressed with this version. I enjoyed the previous reboot too but this one takes what you know and completely tells a different story to what is the usual fair established in the first two versions and the (god awful) movies but retains enough to be familiar. The previous trilogy (Legend for the most part) did a bit to expand on Lara’s background and personality and to flesh her out as a person and this one does it well too. All the positives have been mentioned so I will skip that and point out some negatives. As some of the older fans have been complaining about, a lot of what makes the old school Tomb Raider game play what it is, there's very little of. If you ever enjoyed the climbing puzzles presented in the older games and also the previous Prince of Persia trilogy... there's not much of that here sadly (but block pushing puzzles are gone thankfully) and when it is present, it's only optional tomb exploration stuff and it's extremely easy. So if you hated the climbing puzzles, then it’s a big positive. Only the last area of the game presents you with those reflex testing multiple jumps and puzzle solving but it wasn’t really enough nor again, were they that hard. Another issue I have with the game is too much of it is very automated and hand holding. The older games required you to actually press a button to grab on to ledges when you made a long jump rather than just automatically doing it for you. You don’t really duck into cover like Uncharted because that’s all done for you too so sometimes it’s a hit and miss. I’ve only played this game on normal so far but I also found the combat to be too forgiving, again making it very easy with heaps of ammo and the old exploding barrels everywhere to help out. I rarely used survival vision while playing but I could see it being exploited for the lazier gamers out there. But I am guessing it would be a godsend to newer players to this genre though who would not be familiar enough with the ‘environmental rules’ of the game to work out where to go. One major thing that really lets down the game is the amount of game-breaking glitches which have been found (I have only copped one and nearly had to restart after playing for 10 hours). So please always go into your menu and allocate a new save every 30 minutes or so just in case! Yes, lots of negatives, but as you can see from my rating, all the stuff it does right, it really gets right, from the graphics, story, atmosphere, set pieces and attention to detail. It is really worth playing. Not much to do when you 100% and the multiplayer is nothing special but it’s fantastic while you’re going through it. Overall, despite the negatives, I enjoyed it very much.

Being a huge fan of the original PS1 Tomb Raider series, I had high expectations of this game and the Square-Dynamics team delivered. The story is well written, the voice acting is great and Lara and her companions have quite strong personalities and the environment is beautifully designed. Fans of the Uncharted series will be at home with the movement and combat system, as it almost mimics the style of Nathan Drake. The cover to cover style combat adds a nice touch to Lara’s battle for survival and the transaction from wall to or to crate is smooth and doesn’t feel like you are constantly glued to the wall like in Gears of War. The idea of the bow and arrow weapon set adds a primal feel and I was hoping for more hand crafted weapons but instead Lara picks up guns from dead corpses– it’s not overly disappointing but had fingers crossed for a hand-made hunting knife. The island is semi-open allowing you to fast travel to previous base camps which are also used to upgrade weapons and allocate skill points. The Reboot presents the real, cruel experience of being an action-adventure heroine - Lara screams and yelps when injured in combat and while traveling the island. And when she dies, it’s not pretty. Square-Dynamics unleashes disturbing, gruesome death scenes and can be gut wrenching for some people. Overall, the gameplay is amazing, the environment breath-taking and the character development is strong. TR is defiantly a contender for GOTY.

Right of the bat, I think it is a great reboot and would highly recommend it. The game takes ideas from many modern games and shapes them to it's own mould and this works very well. Gameplay is similar to a 3rd person version of Farcry 3 (set on an island, rescue friends, use a bow, use stealth or not), with Batman Arkham style backtracking and equipment upgrading system to allow access to new areas, and a fair dose of Uncharted when it comes to set pieces, gameplay, and presentation. The story is entertaining, is quite dark, and seems to use ideas and elements of Lost (tv show) and the Descent (movie). Overall the game looks amazing (I'm playing on PS3, gameplay is smooth, no framerate issues if you're worried about that kind of thing). The graphics are really top notch even surpassing those of Uncharted which is not easy to do. Lara's new voice actor also does a great job. Summary: Go get it, you won't be sorry.

This game has caught up to the modern gaming style leaving nothing out. The story is great but be warned you will get a little frustrated with the many cut scenes at the beginning as the tutorial goes on for some time. This game has changed vastly which has destroyed a few franchises but for this game it works really well. There are many scenes where the only way to survive is by button mashing which does sound boring but because of the wonderful graphic and just great action it comes with it makes the button mashing parts a treat. While in the last few Lara Croft games dying became terribly annoying because you had to set very far from the point of death this game succeeds in re-starting you from the point of where you failed. Very common storyline but what else can you do with these jungle based games, it is an old school kind of story reminding me of lord of the flies so it is still pretty fun. I think anyone that plays this game will enjoy it and it has breathed life back into Lara Croft.

Great reboot of a tired franchise. This gen was all about Nathan Drake and Lara had begin to fall apart, but this breathed a life of fresh air in the franchise and set a brilliant launching pad for future titles. The bow and arrow mechanics in this game were probably the best to date, if you liked the old Tomb Raider or love Uncharted this is a must buy.
