Junpei, a fairly normal college student finds himself involved in a deadly conspiracy that he couldn’t have possibly imagined. He awakes aboard an old passenger ferry, dazed and confused he stumbles around the room trying to reclaim his memories. First thing he noticed was a number roughly drawn on the cabin’s door… A bright red number 5. Junpei’s memory then returned and he remembered what happened right before becoming unconscious! A mysterious person with a gas mask crossed his mind. He remembered the haunting words he spoke, “I’m gonna make you play the game… the ‘Nonary Game’… the game of life or death”. “We’ve decided to call 999 an ‘Adventure’ game,” say Ben Bateman, Localization Editor, Aksys Games, “but I don’t really feel that’s entirely accurate. 999 is a game that simulates life, or at least it would if your life was about being trapped on a sinking ship and forced to complete a series of incomprehensible puzzles before your practically inevitable death. It is about relationships, and how they will ultimately kill you. There is also some blood, and an ax, so if you’ve always wanted some blood and an ax in your life, there you go. But what really brings 999 to life are the people who inhabit it. You will learn to care for them; to feel as though you are there and they are your friends, and then they will die because you made the wrong choices. Just like in real life.”

  • Nine Hours: You only have 9 hours before Junpei and the other 8 kidnapped drown. Numerology, music composition and logic puzzles are just a few of the 32 plus obstacles that stand in the way of their freedom
  • Nine Persons: Uncover the mystery surrounding the lives of the 9 captive characters and how their blurry pasts reveal a disturbing future. Help all the characters escape but beware! A wrong decision or careless mistake might put their lives in jeopardy.
  • Nine Doors: Each hostage is cursed with a digital watch that displays their special number. These numbers are the keys to unlocking the 9 doors. Explore your surrounding for clues to unlock the next door by picking up and examining objects.
  • You must use everything in your environment and personal experience to get out

Customer Reviews

Picked up 999 a couple months ago and was not disappointed. Though the gameplay isn't exactly the most revolutionary thing you might expect to see on the DS, the story is absolutely compelling. A dark murder/mystery game that fans of the Ace Attorney series will absolutely love. Be sure to check out Virtue's Last Reward as well!

This is an entertaining and thought-provoking game that I personally consider a 'must-play' for all Nintendo DS owners. It features an perplexing and engrossing plot, colourful and well-developed characters and a quirky yet mature art style. I recommend this game and its sequel for the PS VITA for anyone interested in a truly great mystery-adventure.

An interesting DS game that remains one of my all time favourites. It's a shame it wasn't more popular but it has a large cult following. Very well done character artwork, nicely rendered environments, a thrilling plot and challenging puzzles... it is definitely a fantastic buy and is worth the price tag for this rarer gem.

999 is a combination of a visual novel with escape-the-room puzzles. Though visual novels aren't the kind of game that is wildly popular in the west, the story of this game is incredible and will make it impossible to put your DS down. There are multiple endings wich are determined by the choices you make during your playthrough. The only reason I can't give this 5 stars is because it's only flaw is a major one: unlocking all 6 endings will require you to replay the game 6 times from the beginning, and while you can fast-forward past dialogues, you can't skip the puzzles you had already solved in a previous playthrough. Overall a fantastic game which is followed by an equally good (if not better) sequel for 3DS.

There are very few games, particularly heavily text based games, which reveal the story's twist in such a clever way. This is one of those. I started this game off, thinking it was a typical puzzle game, but when I finally reached that elusive perfect ending (there are six, and my friend forced me to discover the perfect ending last), my mind was blown. It's been a while since I've discovered such an engaging game which played upon suspense and the morbidity of the scenario so well. I could not, in a million years, have guessed the ending. Despite being quite a read, and requiring the playthrough of the game a few times, which may get repetitive, there are always new things to discover which add to the storyline. It is well worth it, I've been recommending it to everyone I know.
