A challange he never imagined!

A teacher he never imagined!

12-year-old Dre Parker could have been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying - and the feeling is mutual - but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre's feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng.

In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts "the karate kid" on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han, who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

This is movie is ok. The acting by Jaden Smith is mediocre as he is only very young but other than that, the acting of Jackie Chan and other characters are really good. Jackie Chan does some really good Kung Fu moves in the movie, but the main story is about training and not about the karate.

This should have been called the Kung-Fu kid (Karate is Japanese). Jackie Chan maintains his usual role as an overall good guy. It is very surprising to see strong acting performances by the children actors. The story itself is questionable. Why they're in China is not very convincing. I've not watched the original, but I think given the modern take (rapper Smith in the titular role), it is not meant to be compared. Overall not a bad movie, but nothing new here either.

by Nathan on September 20th 2012

I only watched this film cause i liked the original karate kid starring ralf macchio(?) from the 80s. I kinda got the feeling that will smith asked his kid what film he wanted to do, and then presto dads star power gets the movie made. Its very very average at best. No comparison although the original is kinda cheesey to view these days.
