The great fighting classic has returned with its full glory, learning from he mistakes of the hopeless kof xii, Kof xiii includes the increased roster with all favourite classics, and a multitude of modes to keep you enjoyed for a while. SF has a new contender for best fighting game this gen.
As any fan of the long-running series knows, the previous installment was just plain sad; thank god King of Fighters XIII returns to the game's roots with fast-paced, intense fighting action (and much better controls). A larger character roster and unlockable characters return, along with plenty of great modes, including a surprisingly deep story mode that fleshes out one partiuclar character's back-story. The full HD character sprites are another high note, which are detailed and incredibly well animated; almost like watching an anime! As with all KOF games, the soundtrack is also of note, with plenty of heavy metal and orchestral scores to keep you in the action. All in all, highly recommened to fans of the series and any serious fighting game fanatic.
At first glance, you would be reminded of KOFXII, which faced a multitude of problems upon its launch. While KOFXIII rectifies many of the issues (such as the limited cast and the annoying zoom effect), some still remain. Most notably, the netcode is still very poor, especially considering that many older fighters (such as BlazBlue or Tekken 6) has notably better performance. Don't think of playing this game online unless you're up against your next door neighbor. In terms of gameplay, the new Hyper Drive gauge changes many things. It is reminiscent of the MAX mode from KOF02, and building the gauge for your anchor character becomes vital. Hence, team order in this game is significantly more important as some characters excel in building gauge, while others excel at dishing out damage with HD activated. This also means that KOFXIII becomes a much more combo intensive game compared to the previous iterations, and may prove to be a barrier to new players.
The first game I bought of Ozgames. Really great game. An excellent addition to both the King of fighters franchise and also the fighting game collection. Love the cartoonish graphics, the characters and the special moves. Reminds me more of the Street fighter sereies than any other fighting game. A game that is fun enough to play casually and serious enough to play competitively.
