It's not Dynasty Warriors as you know and love. It runs terribly (even with the patch), and the whole thing is sort of... blurry. It's actually uncomfortable to play!
The open world that everyone was so excited about makes the game awkward. You just wander into battles, and if you want to know who is there and what the conditions of victory/failure are, you need to pause the game and hope the mission critical guy is important enough to be mentioned on the map. I just lost a battle because a no-one who wasn't on the map (nor did he call out for help) got slain. My guy just sort of froze, a minute later the familiar defeat music played, and then it threw me back to the last checkpoint. I didn't even know what had happened!
It's more RPG than Hack & Slash now, with townsfolk asking you to travel halfway across China to catch some fish for them and such.
A lot of people have been complaining about the English voice acting, but when has a Warriors game NOT had bad voice acting? Although, this time, I feel really bad for the guys who voiced it. It sounds like they were handed a page of lines, and given no context. They stress the wrong words, pause in the wrong places, and their inconsistent pronunciation of Chinese names would make even an Olympics commentator wince.
I don't mean to bag the game out so badly. The battles are still the same kind of square button-mashing fun, and the character designs, as always, are gorgeous! It's just a shame the "cut scenes" don't showcase how beautiful the characters are.
I think I'm most disappointed that it had so much potential, but has fallen very, very short.
