Firefly, the popular Fox television series created by Joss Whedon, comes to life in a new boardgame from Gale Force Nine. Compelling characters, great storytelling and an evocative universe have made Firefly a fan favorite for over a decade. Now fans of the television show and board games can chart their own course with Firefly: The Game.
In Firefly: The Game, players captain their own Firefly-class transport ship, traveling the ‘Verse with a handpicked crew of fighters, mechanics and other travelers. As a captain desperate for work, players are compelled to take on any job – so long as it pays. Double-dealing employers, heavy-handed Alliance patrols and marauding Reavers are all in a day’s work for a ship’s captain at the edge of the ‘Verse.

Settle in people, as this review is specifically to those of you that love the series. I mean REALLY love the series. For you, the idea of a Firefly board game, complete with oh so many bits and all of the characters and SO many decks of cards you could make your own space-faring vessel using them all, why this game must seem like space cowboy heaven itself. Alas. Seem is it. Firefly : The Board Game is a pick-up-and-deliver kind of game that tasks you with establishing missions, collecting cargo (or contraband you sneaky devil you) and flying to your destination to unload said cargo while avoiding the space police or the cannibals lurking on the outer rim of the board. This all sounds like neato fun right? What it becomes is a quest to make as straight a line as possible from one side of the board to the other because that is straight up the easiest way to do what you need to. Try to avoid the dangers that happen randomly at you (from one of the multitudes of decks) which you may or may not be prepared for based on random cards you bought (from the multitudes of other card decks). Try not to run out of fuel, which will turn your entire round into taking one step across a vast galaxy. Or losing that contraband, which the game remarks you then have to get it alone (which happens randomly on about 2 cards in the game). If this sounds like a fun way to spend your evening with your friends, because it will take all evening and then some, then Firefly was destined to be yours before I began writing. However, if you're feeling some trepidation, you should absolutely play before hand, as there are as many greater space related games as there are decks of random mostly meaningless cards in this box. "Did you buy A earlier in this game when it was available?" the game asks. "No," you say "because it was ungodly expensive, on the other side of the board and C looked like a sweet deal, plus it gave me B! And B gets you all the ladies, all the space cowboys know that" "Well sorry to say pal," says the game in the only way it knows how, card form, "guess I'm taking all of your fuel AND your contraband and ... I dunno... maybe one of your crew members? Actually, how about all the female crew members, you clearly do not know what B is for anyway, I mean they're laughing at you for falling for buying B anyway so I'll save you the humiliation. No ladies would EVER want B." And on it goes for another 4 hours or so. I should add, I have not played with the expansions, but based on the fiddliness of the rules and utter lack of compelling gameplay for a game with so much in it I cannot see how they would fix the myriad of issues with this game. If you're not a Firefly fan, you should absolutely avoid this game. There's nothing for you here. A theme you don't care about and no mechanisms to speak of, try Battlestar Galactica instead, even if you're not a fan there's a game there that can suck people in. If you're Geoff however, you should buy this. That's right Geoff. You! Go on. You know why. PS. it gets a half star because it does not allow a no star rating. Also, parking was ample.
This is one of the best games you will ever play its combination of strategy and theme is a great way to to get player excited and engaged in the theme. It's complex but easy to teach beginner players and you will love this game I highly recommend it and sugest buying it.
