Both the book this is based on, and this film, are much less known and less hyped than some of Michael Crichton's other works, but are really as good, or better than anything else I've seen (or read) of his work. The time tavel part is just to get the modern characters in to the medieval time line, and is not a brain burning or particulalry science fictiony focused part of the film. The characters efforts to survive in an alien, brutal, and unfamiliar medieval world, particularly as they at first think they are pretty good being modern and all, is great to see.
