Your adventurous settlers seek to tame the remote but rich isle of Catan. Start by revealing Catan's many harbors and regions: pastures, fields, mountains, hills, forests, and desert. The random mix creates a different board virtually every game. No two games are the same! Embark on a quest to settle the isle of Catan! Guide your settlers to victory by clever trading and cunning development. Use resource combinations- grain, wool, ore, brick, and lumber-to buy handy development cards and build roads, settlements, and cities. Acquire your resources through trades, cards, or lucky dice (even outside your turn). But beware! Someone might cut off your road or buy a monopoly. And you never know when the wily robber might steal some of your precious gains!

Great introduction to modern board gaming. Was one of first I played coming back to the hobby as an adult and got me hooked. I don't play as often anymore as there are many new exciting games.
But still good to have to get out for a old school feel.

This is the first board game I got outside of Monopoly and I could not recommend it anymore to anyone wanting to get into bard games. It is a great way to be introduced into some more complex board game mechanics. All my casual board game friends all unianimously agree they love it and playing this has inspired them to want more board games.

One of the most essential games in any collection, Catan has a lot of mechanics that appeal to gamers both new and experienced. The tile laying allows for high replayability, the dice chucking provides excitement (and a big hit for new gamers), and the trades produces a lot of memorable laughs and strategies. I will always recommend this to anyone who haven't had the chance to play this yet.

I think it's important to point out that this game in its original format is ideal for 3-4 players as it isn't listed in the description here though it is listed on the game box. Having said that, my wife and I played using the official rules (except for resource trading) and still enjoyed the game. To take it to another level though, there are several unofficial 2 players rules floating around on the internet that will reduce the board size and make the game a lot more fun for 2 players so I highly recommend you check them out too.
As relatively new board gamers, we have collected quite a few of the typical gateway / beginner games and this is definitely one of our favourites. The games take about 45 minutes and the fact you can randomly shuffle the board every game means there is a lot of replay-ability. The rules are very easy to understand yet the game is anything but simple and boring. This is an excellent game for beginners, simple as that.
