Product Description

Coup Card Game

You are head of a family in an Italian city-state, a city run by a weak and corrupt court. You need to manipulate, bluff and bribe your way to power. Your object is to destroy the influence of all the other families, forcing them into exile. Only one family will survive...

In Coup, you want to be the last player with influence in the game, with influence being represented by face-down character cards in your playing area.

Each player starts the game with two coins and two influence – i.e., two face-down character cards; the fifteen card deck consists of three copies of five different characters, each with a unique set of powers:

  • Duke: Take three coins from the treasury. Block someone from taking foreign aid.
  • Assassin: Pay three coins and try to assassinate another player's character.
  • Contessa: Block an assassination attempt.
  • Captain: Take two coins from another player, or block someone from stealing coins from you.
  • Ambassador: Draw two character cards from the Court (the deck), choose which (if any) to exchange with your face-down characters, then return two. Block someone from stealing coins from you.

On your turn, you can take any of the actions listed above, regardless of which characters you actually have in front of you, or you can take one of three other actions:

  • Income: Take one coin from the treasury.
  • Foreign aid: Take two coins from the treasury.
  • Coup: Pay seven coins and launch a coup against an opponent, forcing that player to lose an influence. (If you have ten coins, you must take this action.)

When you take one of the character actions – whether actively on your turn, or defensively in response to someone else's action – that character's action automatically succeeds unless an opponent challenges you. In this case, if you can't reveal the appropriate character, you lose an influence, turning one of your characters face-up. Face-up characters cannot be used, and if both of your characters are face-up, you're out of the game.

If you do have the character in question, you reveal it, the opponent loses an influence, then you shuffle that character into the deck and draw a new one, perhaps getting the same character again and perhaps not.

The last player to still have influence – that is, a face-down character – wins the game!

Received this as a gift. Must have game if you want a game that is quick and one to play with people who aren't into games apart from mainstream family board games. The game box and contents are very portable and travels well. Best played with people who are good at poker, or those who have an outgoing personality as this is a social deduction style game. The rules are very simple and most people new to the game will want at least another try at the game immediately after their first. Highly recommended.

This game is a social deduction/ bluffing game. Where you have 2 cards face down as your life, you then use these cards to do actions, you then have the choice of lying or telling the truth when doing your action. It has player elimination but it is a quick filler game.

Coup is a great, quick compact game. If you enjoy bluffing games this one is a great example of the genre. Its a game that can easily be taught and and be played many times over. This is also a game that non gamer will easily pick up and also enjoy playing. The roles can be unbalanced as you play more often but the expansion dose help this slightly. Players can gang up on another player and there is little that can help the target person, otherwise lots of fun. You wont regret this purchase.

It's a great game involving some elements of skill and some of social deceit. Works best with 4 or more players. When you are down to two it can get a little boring, as people tend to have made it clear who they have left so it becomes, duke, steal, duke steal, coup, which is a shame. But never lasts too long.

Honestly, Coup is the best value game out there. You need to beg, bluff, lie, collaborate and backstab your way to supremacy in this 10 minute masterpiece. You can teach it in 5 minutes and you can play it with all ages and experiences. If you come out on top you feel like you have survived a palace coup. Highly recommended if you have the stomach to betray your own parents or children for a place on the top of the pile.
