Boy, I wonder how many Lego games we have now? It’s a good thing they’re so much fun, as otherwise I’d be complaining about their constant releases! With franchises like Jurassic World and Avengers soon to be Lego-fied, there’s no sign of the blocky behemoth slowing down any time soon.
If Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is anything to go by, this is a very good thing. The third Lego outing for the caped crusader, this game takes everything TT Games have learned from the previous instalments, and polished it to a fine sheen.
As the title suggests, Lego Batman 3 moves the story away from Batman’s usual urban haunting ground – to the very final frontier itself, outer space!
Essentially, this is Lego Justice League in everything but name, as DC stalwarts like Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter join the dark knight (and Robin, of course!) in his battle against Brainiac; a supervillain who is obsessed with shrinking entire cities to add to his personal collection.
As you can probably guess, the story doesn’t take itself too seriously, as slapstick comedy is the order of the day. There are some truly funny scenes here (especially from Robin) and – due to a plot twist early on – some heroes and villains adopt the personalities of various Lantern Corps’ powers. This includes a perpetually angry Wonder Woman, a kleptomaniac Flash, and truly mellow Joker!
Of course, those familiar with Lego games know that the main story is only a small part of the experience – there’s also a massive array of collectables to find, such as characters, gold bricks, vehicles and cheats. The characters in particular are an eclectic bunch; there are traditional folks like Aquaman, Green Arrow and Bane – but also bizarre, obscure ones like Polka Dot Man, Condiment King and Mr. Mxyzptlk! Heck, you’ll even be able to play as filmmaker Kevin Smith – and there are cameos from Adam West (who you must rescue in each level), Conan O’Brien (who acts as a guide) and ‘The Green Loontern’ (Daffy Duck in disguise). Just exploring such a loving tribute to DC’s past and present is a joy unto itself, especially considering that you can explore each of the Lantern planets, the moon, the Justice League base, the Hall of Heroes, Hall of Doom and (of course) the Batcave!
In all, Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is a great title – especially when playing in co-op mode with a friend. If you’re a DC fan, well, it goes without saying that this is worth picking up!
